Custom «Hawkeye: Still with Us by George Will» Sample Essay
In the article Hawkeye: Still with Us, George Will informs about the new movie made of Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans that can help understand the origins of the US political culture. According to his point, this culture originates from the times of Hawkeye who was “buckskin-clad colonist,” and the first American popular hero of fiction. Therefore, in order to understand the American nation, it is important to understand Hawkeye and the first settlements. Thus, using the story The Last of the Mohicans, the author of the article has made an attempt to understand and analyze the origins of American political culture which lies in the times of Hawkeye.
George Will states that the US nation is a “nation of Hawkeyes”, and it is very difficult to govern it. However, the character of Hawkeyes can give a reader a key to understanding the US political culture. The author uses the episode from the film to demonstrate that the first Americans have always had their own opinion, and were never loyal subjects to the crown. In fact, they were not subjects at all. Will considers Hawkeye to be a “political problem” which is still relevant in the US society; a man “between forest and settlement.” He will always be in the middle without any chance to take a side. The 1920s were difficult times for America, and it was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence; however, Hawkeye has his own Declaration of Independence. According to the author, Hawkeye’s life is “one long Declaration of Independence.” It means that his life is a constant struggle with the state which will obviously have no winners. Despite it, he just does not know any other way to live. Thus, the people like Hawkeye have formed the American nation, and the Hawkeye-like behavior can be often observed in the modern US society.
According to the author, the US society tears between the idea of the citizenship that is “obligated to society” and the idea of a self-created individual that has no “debts or bonds to society.” Moreover, the issue of “nature and culture” is still present there. In order to demonstrate these problems as fully as possible, the movie comes with a lot of realistic scenes and details. The author states that the film is rated “R” since it has a lot of violence and the scenes of scalping. It is possible to presume that such episodes were not necessary, but, in my opinion, they were applied to convey the spirit of the time as accurately as possible. The George Will states that it was a “heroic place,” but also it could be a “terrifying place.” The author provides a short biography of James Fenimore Cooper, who gave America “its first and most enduring romance.” Since the novel was published in 1826, it can be concluded that the author wrote the story about his present times and events that he observed at that period. The author comes with the image of a frontier that he must have felt himself. He states that such feeling “lies in our national memory.” Two centuries have passed since then, but this frontier is still creating the attitude “toward civic life.” Thus, similarly to the main character, the US society is between culture and nature.
To summarize, the article Hawkeye: Still with Us informs about the movie made of Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans that can be used to understand the origins of the US political culture. According to the author’s point, the US nation is a nation of Hawkeyes that are between forest and settlement. The US society tears between the idea of the citizenship that is obligated to society and the idea of a self-created individual that has no debts or bonds to society. Hawkeye-like people are a political problem. Nevertheless, the modern US political culture consists largely of them. Therefore, it is difficult to be a politician in America since the US society is always in the middle without any chance to make a final decision.
